Plenty of players hit Torment, pull a fresh weapon from the stash, and freeze at the socket screen. A Flawless Topaz looks modest beside the newer Horadric options, yet swapping it out too early can leave a real hole in your setup. Compare your current slots against Diablo IV Items while you're sorting upgrades, not after you've burned gold on gear you'll replace tomorrow. Topaz still earns its place because it answers three different problems without asking for exotic materials.

Three Slots, Three Jobs

Put Flawless Topaz in a weapon for Basic Skill Damage. Put it in armor for Intelligence. Put it in jewelry when Lightning Resistance is the weak line on your character sheet. That's the whole decision tree - and it matters more once Torment penalties start showing up. Craft at the Jeweler from lower-tier Topaz, gold, and gem materials, but don't turn every spare fragment into a gem just because the recipe is available.

Fill the weapon socket used by your main farming setup first.
Use armor Topaz only when Intelligence improves the skills you actually cast.
Check Lightning Resistance before committing jewelry sockets.
Keep materials for the character pushing the highest Torment tier.

Where Socket Plans Usually Break

The obvious idea is simple: make Flawless Topaz for every open socket, then chase Horadric Gems later. That works on paper. In practice, players often craft a full set for temporary leveling pieces, then replace two items after one good drop and stare at an empty material pile. Others copy a weapon socket from a Heartseeker guide while playing a Rogue setup that barely presses its Basic Skill.

Match the gem to the loop in front of you. Heartseeker and Forceful Arrow Rogues get clean weapon value because those attacks stay active. Spiritborn builds that fire rapid Basic Skills to feed resource generation can do the same before unloading Core Skills. Bone Splinter or Reap Necromancers have a useful bridge during early Torment. Sorcerers can lean on armor Topaz for Intelligence in Lightning Spear, Chain Lightning, or Firebolt leveling setups - especially when the extra stat also supports resistance scaling. Make one weapon gem, test the damage loop for a few runs, then spend on armor or jewelry only where the sheet shows a need.

Cheap Power Versus Special Effects

Flawless Topaz isn't the last stop anymore. Horadric Gems bring effects that plain attributes can't copy, and players aiming at the highest Pit tiers or polished leaderboard characters will move there. Most others don't need to rush it. Topaz comfortably carries Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes, Helltide farming, seasonal boss encounters, and mid-tier Torment progression. Some people don't care about squeezing out another fraction of damage. Fair enough - keep the reliable gem until a Horadric replacement changes an actual problem in your build.

Spend Materials Where They Matter

Do you need a complete Topaz set before trying harder content? No. Start with the weapon, check armor Intelligence, then patch Lightning Resistance on jewelry if your defenses are short. If a missing item slot is holding back your build, you can also buy cheap Diablo 4 gear while keeping your gem materials for the pieces you know will stay equipped.
