Diablo 4 is at its best on a sofa, with two controllers, a pile of snacks, and one shared screen full of demons. Supported console editions allow two-player local co-op, while the computer edition does not provide same-screen play. You'll still need an internet connection and separate console and game profiles, so sort out the account setup before spending your evening comparing D4 Gold purchases or rebuilding your loadout.

What Couch Co-Op Actually Feels Like

This isn't split-screen. Both heroes remain in one shared camera view, which makes combat feel wonderfully coordinated but turns wandering into a negotiation. One player can't sprint several dungeon rooms ahead while the other stops to inspect loot, and neither hero can independently visit a distant town during the same activity. In my experience, the best pairs agree on a pace before starting: push objectives together, pause for inventory at natural breaks, and save side-path arguments for after the boss.

The Console Setup

Each player needs a controller, an eligible profile, and a linked game account. The second player joins after the first hero loads into Sanctuary, then selects a character that matches the party's mode. Seasonal characters should group with seasonal characters, while Eternal characters stay in their own progression track. Solo Self-Found characters cannot join couch co-op, so don't build a local session around that option.

1. Sign in both console profiles before launching the session.
2. Load the intended party leader's character first.
3. Have the second player activate the extra controller and join.
4. Confirm the two heroes share the same mode before starting major quests.

Shared Camera, Shared Decisions

The camera changes how you build and play. A high-mobility melee setup may constantly pull the group forward, while a ranged build can struggle if it lags behind. For couch co-op, visual clarity and recovery tools often matter more than squeezing out a theoretical DPS gain. Crowd control, protection, movement skills, and reliable revival options make mistakes less painful, especially when both players are learning a new seasonal build.

Console Co-Op Compared With Computer Play

Diablo 4's computer edition supports online parties, but two people cannot control separate heroes at one machine in a local session. That difference is easy to miss because the computer edition accepts controllers. Controller support changes input; it doesn't add the console version's shared-screen mode.

So, When Does the New Season Start?

Season of Death Awakening is already live. It began on June 30, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. PDT, or 1:00 p.m. EDT, adding Pandemonium Ruptures, revised Realmwalker encounters, Deathtoll Chambers, a seasonal boss, Mythic Unique changes, and the full Tower and Leaderboards release. As of August 14, 2026, Blizzard had not confirmed the exact launch date for the following season. From what I've seen, starting now makes more sense than waiting unless you specifically want the excitement of day-one progression.

The Best Local-Play Plan

Choose complementary classes, agree on a party leader, and decide whether the session is about story progress, seasonal objectives, or endgame farming. Keep equipment stops short, because one player browsing every legendary can drain the momentum for everyone else. Campaign progress generally follows the leader's active quest state, so couples and friends should use the character with the most useful shared progress. Once the season ends, those characters move to the Eternal mode, giving the pair a place to keep playing after the seasonal cycle. For a shared evening of dungeons and boss kills, Diablo IV Gold is only one small part of the preparation; matching builds and matching expectations matter far more.
